2010: the bunkered team's take

(continued)

Laura McLachlan, staff writer

Biggest hope for 2010:  sergio.jpg

That Sergio Garcia (right) finally breaks his duck and wins that elusive major (hence my Open Championship prediction). Having performed well at St Andrews last time around and coming so close to glory in his 'home' major on numerous occasions, it would be a dream to see the Spaniard lift the Claret Jug.

Biggest fear for 2010:

Anything happening to jeopardise Europe winning the Ryder Cup. Whether it be injury, absence or even the weather (which, in Wales in October, could provide somewhat of a banana skin...) let's hope nothing stands in the way of Monty achieving what, for my money, would be his biggest milestone to date.

Player to watch in 2010:

Should Woods' 'indefinite' break go beyond 2010, Phil Mickelson will be on hand to take full advantage. After an emotional year, during which he won three events and just missed out on the US Open, I'd say he's odds on to clear up in 2010. While the Tiger's away, Lefty will play....

Young player to watch in 2010: hustby.jpg

Sam Hutsby (right). His performances at the tail end of 2009 in the Castello Masters, where he was eighth, and Singapore where he finished 14th, proved he has what it takes - as did his performance at Tour School where he finished just one shot behind winner Simon Khan. Hopefully his form continues into 2010.

Personal golf goal for 2010:

To actually work a bit of style into my play! Having spent much of 2009 learning how to actually hit the ball, 2010 will pretty much consist of, what I like to call, 'refining' (short for - figuring out how to hit the ball in the direction I intend it to!) my golf game...

Predictions…

Masters champ: Phil Mickelson

US Open champ: Lee Westwood

Open champ: Sergio Garcia

US PGA champ: Phil Mickelson

Ryder Cup winners: Europe (marginally)

Biggest hope for 2010: tiger.jpg

Aside from the obvious hope for a Scot to win a major, most of all I want to see the successful return of Tiger Woods (right), and sooner rather than later. Notwithstanding his 'transgressions' off the course, the man is the most exciting player on it and golf isn’t the same without him.

Biggest fear for 2010:

In Colin Montgomerie Scotland has one of the greatest Ryder Cup players of all time and it is only right that he should taste success as captain. So, although confident Monty will deliver the goods, a USA Ryder Cup win at Celtic Manor is my biggest fear.

Player to watch in 2010:

As 2009 turned out to be the best year for Scottish golfers in many years, I think the time is nigh for one of our home grown rising stars to take the game by storm. On the back of last season's form, Martin Laird is my best bet.

Young player to watch in 2010: ishikawa.jpg

With four Japan Tour wins and an Open appearance under his belt in 2009 - not to mention the fact that he also became the youngest ever player to reach the Official World Golf Rankings top 50 last September - the hottest prospect in the game right now has to be Ryo Ishikawa (right).

Personal golf goal for 2010:

The same as it has been for as long as I can remember: get down to single figures! I'm only two or three shots away, so, with a conscious effort to get in a lot more practice and compete in a few more medals, it's not beyond the realms of possibility. Fingers crossed!

Predictions...

Masters champ: Phil Mickelson

US Open champ: Steve Stricker

Open champ: Lee Westwood

US PGA champ: Rory McIlroy

Ryder Cup winners: Europe
