Monty: Europeans stronger than ever
European Ryder Cup captain believes this is Europe's year
European Ryder Cup captain Colin Montgomerie believes his side is stronger than ever and predicted more majors to add to those won by Padraig Harrington and Graeme McDowell.
"I feel that after Padraig's success in 2007 and 2008, the Europeans have decided that, if he can do it, I can do it," said the Scot.
"The competition has increased all the standards and the more competition there is, the higher the standards are."
As a result, the European skipper has a tough job on his hands choosing the three wildcard players that help make up his 12-man team.
The leading four players on the Ryder Cup world points list will receive automatic places, joined by the leading five on the European points list.
"You've got Luke Donald, Justin Rose, Padraig Harrington, Martin Kaymer and they are not on the world points list," said Monty.
"And the top four are Lee Westwood, Rory McIlroy, Graeme McDowell and Ian Poulter.
"That is as strong an eight as you can get right there. And only four can play.
"I don't think any captain has had this dilemma before and I, unfortunately, am going to have to leave out some very, very good players, some winners on this year's circuit."
Also in the hunt for wildcard selections are Ryder Cup regulars Sergio Garcia, Paul Casey, Robert Karlsson and Henrik Stenson, as well as the in-form Rhys Davies, who will be hoping to play in front of home fans at Celtic Manor.
Such is the competition for places that the 47-year-old has been amazed at just how hard the players are working on their game.
"I've never seen people practice so hard physically, mentally, on every aspect of the game as I've seen this year especially, and last," he said. "I never worked, ever, as hard as these guys are right now on their games."
The Ryder Cup takes place from October 1-3 at Celtic Manor this year.

The worst kept secret in golf is finally out. Tiger Woods will play in this year’s Ryder Cup, captain Corey Pavin having elected to give the embattled 14-time major winner one of his four wild cards.
No great surprise there. As poor a season as he has had by his own high standards, compared to the rest of the guys ...
