Scots come close to victory

Elliot Saltman and Kelsey MacDonald just miss out on victory

It was a weekend of near-misses for Scotland's golfers - with Elliot Saltman and Kelsey MacDonald both pipped at the post for victories.

The eldest Saltman's bid for his first Challenge Tour victory was snatched from his grasp on the final day, as Spaniard Alvaro Velasco in the Fred Olsen Challenge de Espana came through for the title.

With a five-shot lead at the halfway stage, Saltman looked on track for his first big win on the professional circuit, and, taking a two-shot lead into the final round, it looked as though the win would come to fruition.

However, dropped shots at the fifth and eighth saw Velasco, who soared to a superb 65, overtake him at the top to become the event's first home winner for over a decade.

"Obviously I am sad," said Saltman. "But I played very well for three days and if someone had told me at the start of the week that I'd finish second I would not have believed it.

"I'm pleased for Alvaro, he played great and this week I proved my golf is good enough to content and my mental side is also working well."

Meanwhile, in the first all-British final for ten years, Nairn Dunbar's Kelsey MacDonald was narrowly beaten in the final of the British Women's Amateur Championship at Ganton by Royal Birkdale's Kelly Tidy. The Scot, who was disappointed last month not to be named in the team for the 2010 Curtis Cup match, was beaten 2 and 1 by the 18-year-old English girl.

On the European Tour, David Drysdale came through with a pair of 68s on Saturday and Sunday to be the top Scot at the BMW International Open in Munich on a share of 11th alongside Peter Whiteford, who had led the event after the first round. Paul Lawrie, however, fell to a final round 74 to finish tied for 17th.

7th Sep 10Easy Ryders...

The worst kept secret in golf is finally out. Tiger Woods will play in this year’s Ryder Cup, captain Corey Pavin having elected to give the embattled 14-time major winner one of his four wild cards. No great surprise there. As poor a season as he has had by his own high standards, compared to the rest of the guys ... Read More
