North Berwick honours its famous golfers

The town of North Berwick is to recognise the achievements of the golfing pioneers who emigrated form the town over a century ago, taking the game to all corners of the globe.

Recent research has identified over 120 young men and women that left East Lothian between 1894-1924 and joined the professional ranks in America, Canada, Australia and in distant parts of Europe.

From the list, 45 have been selected to be honoured with a green plaque to be placed on the property where they were born, lived in or worked in within the town, which will be officially unveiled by 2009 Ladies British Open champion Catriona Matthew in May.

These buildings will form part of a Golfing Heritage Trail, which will be detailed on a leaflet and map with various other points of interest around North Berwick.

Aside from the national champions, such as Dorothy Campbell, Fred McLeod, Dan Kenny and Willie Anderson, the plaques will also pay reference to James R Thomson and Jack Hobens, who helped to draft the constitution of the Professional Golfers Association of America.

The historical research, carried out by a dedicated team of North Berwick residents, also discovered the overgrown and neglected buriel place of Frenchman Arnaud Massy, an adopted son of North Berwick and the first overseas player to win the Open in 1907.

The distinguished list of important historical in its full form can be found at northberwick.org.uk, where you can learn about all of the most recent research and the interesting results that it has thrown up.
