A win at the Northern Trust Open has allowed American Steve Stricker to knock his countryman Phil Mickelson off the No.2 spot in the Official Golf World Rankings.
Stricker has claimed four tournaments in his last 15 events, moving to No.2 for the second time in his career, only four years after losing his PGA Tour card.
To overtake Tiger Woods in the No.1 position, Stricker would have to win three more times, which, if he replicates his form of last year and Woods remains on his indefinite break from golf, is not altogether impossible
Asked if he could imagine himself as officially the best player in the word, Stricker said: "I don't allow that. We all know who the best player in the world is, and I'll just continue to do what I do, and that's practise hard and work at it and try to improve."
Phil Mickelson, whose last win came at the Tour Championship back in September, is now down to third with Lee Westwood and Jim Furyk in fourth and fifth respectively.
