A regular at the top of golf travel destinations lists around the world, the La Manga Club has been at it again as it was named the ‘Best Golf Resort in Spain’ at the World Golf Awards at the end of last year.

The luxury complex, which is situated in Murcia in the south-east of the country, reported a significant growth in numbers across its sports, leisure and business sectors last year as people flocked to enjoy its range of five-star attractions.

Among its highlights in 2014 was the opening of a bespoke Leadbetter Golf Academy. The new €1million world-class golf tuition facility is the only one of its kind in Spain and helped to increase the number across its golf facilities.

The academy’s team of expert professionals gave 3,750 lessons between opening and the start of the new year, while a grand total of 118,400 rounds of golf were played on the resort’s three championship courses, an average of nearly 325 rounds per day throughout the year.

The club’s iconic South Course has hosted numerous high-profile professional and amateur tournaments, including staging the Spanish Open on five occasions, and was the centre of attention once again in 2014. As well as hosting the 2014 Spanish Seniors Championship and 2014 Children’s Championships, the famous par-73 layout also held the first La Manga Club PGAs of Europe Pro-Am, the climax to the 2014 ECCO Tour Winter Series, and the 2014 Footballers’ Classic.

Away from the golf course, around 3,500 guests attended the resort’s popular tennis academy in 2014 with its team of 22 coaches giving more than 5,000 lessons to players of all ages and abilities, with the youngest pupil just two-and-a-half years old.

Speaking before the announcement of the award, La Manga Club’s general manager Jose Asenjo said it would be a fitting tribute to the club’s late founder Gregory Peters if the club were to the award for a fourth successive year.

He added it would be deserved recognition for the continued hard work of the staff at the resort as it keeps setting the benchmark higher and higher for the years that follow.

Asenjo also pledged that everyone at the La Manga Club would continue to offer the best possible service and facilities to visitors.
