Northumberland’s Slaley Hall Country Club has unveiled plans to boost the amount of youngsters playing the game by allowing the children of its members to join the De Vere resort free of charge.

The club hopes the scheme will encourage juniors to take advantage of the resort’s golf courses and practice facilities, as well as its team of skilled PGA Professionals.

Head teaching pro at Slaley Hall Steven Fawcitt joined the club earlier this year and was immediately charged with the task of increasing the number of lady golfers and juniors at the club.

“Free junior membership for Slaley CC members is fantastic and can only help improve the future for the resort.” – Steven Fawcitt

Fawcitt believes he has succeeded in attracting more juniors to the resort, and, as a result, plans to set up a winter academy for youngsters to hone their skills in the coming months.

“We have made incredible strides with our junior section over the past eight months,” said Fawcitt. “When I started at the resort, we only worked with a limited number of engaged juniors, however this has really developed to the stage where we now have a host of sessions with multiple age groups.

“To be able to offer free junior membership for Slaley CC members is fantastic and can only help improve the future for the resort.

“We hope that it will encourage parents to bring their children along for coaching, especially over the off season, when I will be running a series of winter academies for all golfers to get their games into shape for the upcoming season.”

Keith Pickard, De Vere group director of golf, is delighted with the work carried out at Slaley Hall and hopes the club can become a benchmark for junior development in the near future.

“At De Vere Golf, we are always looking to help develop the game at each of our resorts,” said Pickard. “The outstanding work of the team at Slaley Hall combined with this new junior membership offer can only help to further enhance our reputation for this.

“To be able to make the exceptional facilities at Slaley Hall accessible to even more young people looking to get into golf, is something we are extremely excited about and hope to set the standard for the golf development of future generations.”
