Finally, Dustin Johnson has his first major title – and he did so thanks to an incredible performance with his TaylorMade gear.

With his TaylorMade M1 driver, the American averaged almost 317 yards off the tee – more than 30 yards above the field average – and hit 64% of fairways (field average 57%).

But it was this stat which was the most impressive. Thanks to DJ’s supreme length, with shorter second shots – a lot of the time using his TaylorMade Tour Preferred EF wedges – he hit 76% of greens, which was almost 20% above the field average.

Way to go, DJ!

Day and Rory face 2-iron conundrum

Could this be the way to go at Royal Troon next month? Rory McIlroy and Jason Day both used 2-irons at the US Open and, with the Ayrshire venue (7,208 yards) very similar in length to Oakmont (7,219 yards), it looks as though they could employ the same tactic.

But both players weren’t great off the tee at Oakmont. Using his TaylorMade RSi 2 2-iron, Day averaged 54% of fairways hit over his four rounds, while for McIlroy and his Nike Vapor Fly Pro 2-iron, it was a mere 46%.

Food for thought for the duo heading into the third major of the year, for sure.

Titleist 917 drivers to debut

Several players are expected to put the Titleist 917 driver in play at the Quicken Loans National this week with two new models: the 917D2 and 917D3.

The 917 models are said to have an Active Recoil Channel, which is a slot behind the driver face that improves ball speed and lowers spin. There’s also a new adjustable weight technology, which is labelled ‘SureFit CG’. According to GolfWRX.com, a release can be expected this autumn.

Bubba games G/Fore high-tops

How about one of the biggest tournaments of the year to enter the high-top game? That’s how it was for Bubba Watson, who wore these G/Fore Crusader high-tops during Tuesday’s practice round, before wearing a black pair during round one.

According to Golfweek.com, the Crusader shoes are available in two colours – onyx (which he wore on Friday) and snow (on Tuesday).
