There was a recent study carried out asking golfers to name what they think is most synonymous with each equipment manufacturer. Unsurprisingly, the top word associated with Mizuno was ‘irons’ and the Japanese brand has now unveiled its newest additions to the MP line for the new season.

The new MP tour sample range, includes; the MP-15 with an evolved Ti Muscle technology, the new type MP-H5 complete with ‘hollow flow’ concept and the MP-T5 wedges that offer 25 different loft and bounce combinations.

Mizuno staffer Luke Donald tested out all of the gear and his feedback was crucial to the brand, as it wanted to see if one of its global ambassadors was able to feel the benefits of the research and development.

Mizuno says the new MP-15 embodies the definitive balance of tradition and technology for the stronger ball striker, with clean and compact lines designed to give more feel and workability. It also features the Ti Muscle technology and by using lighter materials Mizuno has been able to keep all the workability, manoeuvrability and shot making capabilities of what the brand says is traditionally found in an MP golf club.

“You want that solid strike, everyone as a golfer knows what that feels like,” said Donald. “This is a club that appeals to me. The centre of gravity on the smaller ones is a little lower so you can control trajectory very well but also has a good solid feel.

“It’s one of the reasons I love Mizuno, it’s nice to see the blend of both craftsmanship and technology.”

Mizuno MP-H5

A direct replacement for the MP Fli-Hi, the new MP-H5 has a half hollow design developed to help you meet the demands of the modern golf course.

When they were designing this set, Mizuno wanted to keep the launch high but reduce the amount of spin, and that’s exactly what they’ve achieved. Taking the best parts of the MP-H4 and the MP Fli-Hi, the technology in this set transforms as you go down, moving from a full hollow design to a half hollow, helping give that forgiveness and workability.

“MP-H5 will suit players who have grown up on traditional irons, but don’t want to be left behind on distance and stopping power,” said Chuck Couch, Mizuno’s vice president of product management. “In another ten years we think the majority of tour players will be using irons like this.”

The final new addition is the MP-T5 wedges, which is now offered with two sole types and 25 different variations of loft and bounce. The feel in these wedges comes from Mizuno’s Grain Flow Forging construction, benefitting you most around the green.

“The challenge with the MP-T5 was to find a way to increase spin,” said Chris Voshall, Mizuno’s senior engineer. “It came down to square-ness of hit, which is achieved differently depending on your technique. So we added a huge variation of bounce and loft options.”
