Ojee Golf’s Talon makes its mark in Asia

Ojee Golf made its mark in Asia recently after chief executive Matt Hulbert was handpicked to present the Talon at the International Festival for Business (IFB) launch in Shanghai.

The Teesside-based startup, founded by Hulbert and his father Paul in 2014, produced the Talon after a 12-month quest to solve a critical issue for golfers: how to establish and replicate the optimum golf stance or set up position.

The result was a digital display unit that attaches to the top of any golf club, together with a separate wireless back unit, which uses patent-pending technology to remove guesswork by calculating and clearly displaying four critical angles of address: spine angle, shaft angle, club shaft to spine angle and rotation angle.

Hulbert was invited along with just five other UK companies to represent the ‘Northern Powerhouse’ and present the Talon to more than 100 Chinese businesses and officials as part of the UK government’s official visit to the country.

“It was both surreal and a great honour for Ojee Golf to be invited to such a prestigious event,” said Hulbert, whose background is in product design. “The UK has become the most popular destination for Chinese investment in Europe and, being from Middlesbrough, I was delighted to represent the ‘Northern Powerhouse’.

“Having just finished our crowdfunding campaign, it’s fantastic that people are beginning to take notice of the Talon and believe in it as much as we do. We are looking forward enormously to the first production run in November.”

The inspiration behind the Talon came from the words of Jack Nicklaus, who highlighted the importance of posture in his book, Golf My Way, by saying: “If you set up correctly, there’s a good chance you’ll hit a reasonable shot, even if you make a mediocre swing. If you set up to the ball poorly, you’ll hit a lousy shot even if you make the greatest swing in the world.”

The Talon was born from those words and have become the driving force behind Ojee Golf’s pursuit to develop a training aid unlike any other.
