Mizuno has announced a host of new technological breakthroughs with its JPX850 line, as it kick-starts ‘year of innovation’. The range boasts a number of technical and manufacturing advances for the Japanese manufacturer aimed at increasing ball speed and distance.

Central to the new line is the introduction of Boron within Mizuno’s Grain Flow Forging process. This has allowed Mizuno to increase the strength of its Forged material, as a result, its R&D team have had greater design freedom leading to a greater distance from iron to iron.

Tetsuya Kanayama, senior R&D manager at Mizuno is particular proud of the speed at which the brand has developed its new technologies.

“It’s rare to have so many breakthrough technologies at one time,” said Kanayama. “Normally golf equipment evolves with incremental changes. So we are incredibly proud to unveil these breakthroughs and help golfers hit the ball further than ever before.”

JPX850 Driver

Mizuno

In 2007, Mizuno introduced a sliding weight system called Fast Track to alter a driver’s draw/fade tendency.

Mizuno has now evolved this technology so golfers are able to customise spin rate and launch angle in the JPX850. This attempts to help all swing speeds achieve maximum possible total yardage.

The JPX-850 uses twin 8g weights, which are located on either the central sliding rail, or two lateral slots. With ten unique settings, players of all head speeds can dial in their preferred launch and spin settings.

In combination with Mizuno’s Quick Switch shaft release system, the JPX850 also offers lofts from 7.5 to 11.5 within one head for adjustability.

The JPX850 head is a compact, powerful 440cc, and utilises a Hot Metal face and Rebound Crown to maximise balls speeds.

JPX850 Fairway wood

The philosophy behind the new fairway wood is based upon low spin rates and high workability, while maintaining a generous clubhead size.

The main focus of the JPX850’s Shock Wave sole is to enable the entire clubhead to contract and expand on impact.

This is aimed at delivering an additional energy source to the clubface. The additional mass also lowers the head’s centre of gravity, maintaining high ball speeds directly off the turf.

In addition, there is a four-degree range of loft adjustment possible within each fairway head through the use of Mizuno’s Quick Switch shaft adjustability.

JPX850 Hybrid

Sharing most of the same principles as the JPX850 fairway wood, the new hybrid also contains shock wave technology. It features low COG for ball speeds that match the clubface upon impact, while a waffle crown saves weight for a low spin COG effect.

“The ShockWave sole overcomes the size limitation of fairways and hybrids by enabling the entire head to flex,” said David Llewellyn, Mizuno’s R&D Manager. “It’s a hugely improved way to increase ball speed without the downside of moving the sweet spot too high up the face.”

JPX850 Irons

JPX850Forged_Pair

The JPX850 breaks the regular rules of golf equipment with a face that flexes past the competition limits placed by the USGSA and R&A on drivers.

Increased ball speed and distance is sought through increasing the flexible portion of the clubface. A reinforced frame around the clubface makes it play effectively larger, without increasing its size.

Equally as important, this framework tries to ensure ball speeds are consistently high across the entire clubface and that high COR is not created at the expense of feel or control.

RRP £72 per iron (steel shaft)
