• New Mizuno JPX900 designs unveiled
• Driver, fairway woods and hybrids set for 2017 release
• All have been built to cater for a wide range of swings
Following hot on the heels of the release of the new JPX900 irons, the Mizuno JPX900 metalwoods are set to hit shelves in 2017 having ‘squeezed every possible yard’ out of the design.
Last month, Mizuno revealed its three new sets of irons and now the JPX900 driver, fairway woods and hybrids have joined them to complete the family.
This time around, Mizuno’s R&D department was challenged by its tour staff to create a driver that gave the same performance on centre strikes as the JPX850, without the drop off in ball speed on hits away from the centre.
With that feedback in mind, Mizuno’s engineers say they have created ‘a very different driver’.

The Mizuno JPX900 driver features a new multi-thickness face strengthened in key areas to boost ball speeds across its full height and width.
The head also has new levels of adjustability with two 8g weights and three Fast Tracks in the sole. The Quick Switch hosel returns, allowing you to change loft or shaft quickly.

Mizuno’s tour staff also asked for a driver that looked easier to hit. To achieve that, the Mizuno JPX900 driver head has been made longer, wider and shallower, resulting in a driver that ‘can be optimised to an incredibly wide array of swing types’.
“It’s a very different approach to a tour type driver,” said Chris Voshall, Mizuno’s senior club engineer.
“So many of the changes were based on creating more even ball speeds across the face, that it became a driver that will work for a really wide range of players.
“Add to that the levels of adjustability and you’ve got a driver that can pinch out a few more yards for almost anyone.”

The new Mizuno JPX900 fairway woods promise have been designed to give more ball speed to everyone.
The Shockwave Sole has been expanded compared to the JPX850 to give the increase in ball spead, while the sliding weight system in the sole features a 15g weight to tailor your spin and launch to what you require.
Like in the driver, the Quick Switch system features again in the hosel, allowing the loft to be adjusted to a range of four degrees.

“The fairway wood is one club we all strike really differently,” continued Voshall. “To be able to add loft, or move the weight back from the face, makes the JPX900 incredibly versatile.
“Our tour players will generally take loft off their 3-wood to use it as a safe driver alternative – so being able to move a little weight away from the face for a touch more spin is even useful for them.”

The family is completed by the Mizuno JPX900 hybrids. It’s the first from the brand to feature adjustability and has been built like a wood to play like an iron.
It shares much of the same technology as the fairway wood including the Shockwave Sole and the Quick Switch hosel with the focus on creating a club that plays more like a long iron.
The face of the JPX900 sits more like an iron than in Mizuno’s previous hybrid and has been set up a little shorter and flatter than previously to work especially well for anyone who normally hooks their hybrids.
