Nike Golf’s research and design facility, The Oven, is the hub for gear used by Woods, McIlroy and the rest of Nike’s tour staff. It’s also the place where all of their innovations begin, just like the brand new VRS Covert 2.0 irons.

Golf club engineers and designers built upon the performance benefits of the first generation of Covert irons and improved specific design elements in the 2014 model to make it easier for golfers to hit the ball farther and higher with more stability and feel.

Just over a year ago, Cindy Davis, president of Nike Golf, presented Rory McIlroy to the world as Nike Golf athlete. Today, she revealed Nike’s new irons with a phrase that epitomises the brand’s attitude to golf club development: ‘If it’s good enough, then we must make it better.’

“These irons have proven to be the best distance irons we have created to date.” – Chris Savage, Nike Golf irons innovation engineer

On that basis, we should expect a lot from the VRS Covert 2.0 irons. Nike has shifted the centre of gravity behind the centre of the face to give more distance and feel in the area where you hit the ball most.

The weight in the back of the clubhead has been shifted lower and more towards the toe for a higher and more stable ball flight. There’s a larger cavity, too, which has meant more metal has been pushed to the perimeter of the clubhead. This allows for a larger face and amplifies the ‘trampoline effect’ for higher ball speeds at impact.

Nike’s proprietary NexCOR variable thickness tech also features, to help add to the increase in ball speed even more and ultimately, more distance.

“What’s impressive about the VRS Covert 2.0 set is that golfers can be aggressive and confident with these irons,” says Chris Savage, Nike Golf irons innovation engineer.

“This set utilises our largest cavity and thinnest perimeter to deliver higher ball speed and greater distance. We have also refined our leading edge bevel to make it easier for these irons to go through the turf. Throughout development, these irons have proven to be the best distance irons we have created to date.”
