Amy Macdonald has told bunkered.co.uk it was a huge thrill to play for golf fans at the Ryder Cup this week. The Scottish singer-songwriter admitted it was “a little nerve-wracking” to play to a TV audience of around 500 million, but an “amazing” experience all the same.
“It was brilliant fun and great to be part of it,” she said. “Obviously these things don’t happen every day and it’s incredible that such an amazing event is happening on your doorstep.
“It’s really cool to be in such an amazing platform like this.” – Amy Macdonald
“It’s a little nerve-wracking playing to (a global TV audience). I just focus on the people that are sitting in front of me and pretend there are no cameras. But, yeah, it’s really cool to be in such an amazing platform like this.”
When first asked to take part in proceedings at the Hydro last night in Glasgow, she originally planned to perform with just her guitar alone, before she learned that the Royal Scottish National Orchestra would also be on-stage.
“I did a tour with the orchestra at the end of last year, so because I actually had all the music for my songs we asked if it would be possible to do that again, and they said yes. After that, I think that’s the direction the show went, people singing with the orchestra.”

Amy Macdonald, 27, also performed at the Commonwealth Games this summer and has been involved in opening Scottish football matches at Hampden Park in recent years.
“I feel lucky that I’m able to do that. I seem to be the ‘go to’ person for the sporting events this year,” she said. “I did the Commonwealth Games and then I get asked to do an event like the Ryder Cup…I mean, it’s only up the road. That made it more exciting for me.”
The self-taught guitarist said she didn’t get a chance to speak to any of the players at last night’s Gala Concert. “I didn’t meet anyone. Because these buildings are so cavernous, you don’t bump into anyone. When the American team were waiting to go on, I was standing next to them, as I was next to go on stage. I could see their faces and that was quite exciting but I didn’t really fancy bothering them when they’re about to do their thing!”
“I watched the last Ryder Cup and remember how tense and exciting it was.” – Amy Macdonald
A No.1 selling Scot, Amy Macdonald from Bishopbriggs, says she enjoys watching golf but is “definitely a part-timer”.
“I do focus on all the majors, though I don’t really know a lot. I suppose I know all the big names. I watched the last Ryder Cup and remember how tense and exciting it was and a lot of people will be interested to see what happens this time.”
The last time she played golf? “Not that long ago. Crazy golf at Braehead. That’s about as far as my skills go.”
Amy Macdonald takes bunkered quiz
—
BR Right Amy, let’s test your golf knowledge.
AM Oh god, it won’t be very good.
BR Let’s see how you get on. How many majors has Rory won?
AM Well he won the two recently, and he has another. So he’s won three? Is that right?
BR No, he’s won four. Sorry. Do you know who holed the winning putt in the last Ryder Cup?
AM I remember watching that… (looks at tour manager) you’re not going to be any help. I couldn’t tell you.
BR That’s fine. It was Martin Kaymer. Victor Dubuisson is on the European team this week. Where’s he from?
AM Victor Dubuisson sounds like a French name to me.
BR Correct.
AM Yes! Ha!
BR How many majors would make up golf’s grand slam?
AM Four.
BR Well done.
AM Yes!
