• Cambuslang Golf Club has been saved after landmark vote
• Vote to save the club ‘not as close as had been expected’
• Ends 18 months of uncertainty surrounding the club’s future

CAMBUSLANG GOLF CLUB | SCOTTISH GOLF

Cambuslang Golf Club has been saved after members voted to reject the proposal to sell off the land for property and net between £15-20,000.

In a landmark vote last night, the 267 full members who were eligible chose to keep the nine-hole club in business and while the club wouldn’t divulge the exact result, it ‘wasn’t as close as expected’, especially given that in October last year, 71% of members opted to continue to negotiate the sale of the site.

“We’re absolutely delighted,” club secretary and treasurer Alan Smith told bunkered.co.uk. “Our history has been maintained and we’re looking forward to celebrating our 125th anniversary next year.

“I thought it was going to be close, but it wasn’t as close as I thought it was going to be. We had a couple of speakers on the night – a past president who was very emotional when speaking about the history of the course – and that may have swayed a few people.”

Had Cambuslang’s members opted to sell up, it would’ve marked the second Glasgow club in seven months to close after Blairbeth succumbed to extreme financial woes in October. Cambuslang, which has 494 members in total as 227 associate members were not permitted to vote, has 25 former Blairbeth members, and Mr Smith offered reassurances that Cambuslang are in a healthy financial position.

“We’re financially very sound – we’re not in any way destitute,” said Mr Smith. “That’s why I was surprised the building company came to us in the first place because we’re probably one of the more well off clubs in the area.

“Because the offer came in, the committee felt duty bound to put it to the members, who voted on a couple of occasions to continue to the negotiations to see what was going to be there at the end of it.

“We may have to put something in the constitution to prevent us having these approaches, because this was the third one in 20 years. What happened here, and what other golf clubs should be made aware of, is that these companies will come in occasionally with big original sums to entice you – and this has caused two years of heartache at this club with arguments among members. It’s been very divisive and has caused a lot of disharmony.

“But moving forward, I don’t foresee any problems. We’ve got a lot of interest in membership – we’re likely to be reopening our full membership soon – and I’m sure interest will be even greater now that we’ve got this behind us.”

The result of the vote has also meant that the club’s nine members of staff – three full-time greens staff, one full-time stewardess, Mr Smith as part-time secretary and four casual bar staff, finally have some job security after an 18-month period of uncertainty.
