• Members to decide future of Cambuslang Golf Club on Tuesday
• If the proposal gets go-ahead, members will net at least £16,825
• Facebook page urges voters to reject the proposals

CAMBUSLANG GOLF CLUB

Members of Cambuslang Golf Club will on Tuesday night vote whether or not to sell the nine-hole club – ending a near 18-month long saga.

According to the Daily Record, should the club’s 271 qualifying members agree to vote for the proposal, they will each receive a dividend of £16,825. However, back in November 2014, when talks of a sale were first mooted, members could have got up to £47,000 each if they had agreed to a quick sale.

Barratt Homes is understood to be the interested party, with land promotion company Gladman chosen to handle the sale of the land, should the proposal be given the green light.

On October 27 last year, members voted emphatically in favour of continuing to negotiate the sale of the site, with ‘Yes’ gaining a majority of some 71%.

Days later, the captain Craig Cochrane posted on the club’s Facebook page: “This will raise some questions from all other membership categories which I fully understand.

“I would, however, stress, that this does not mean the golf club will be definitely sold but it is perhaps, the first step in that direction.”

The fallout from that vote has been substantial, with a ‘Save Cambuslang Golf Club’ Facebook page set up just two weeks later.

John Bell posted to the page: “Through great efforts by the committee, purchased the course in 1922. What would these golfers make of the current custodians of the club, who with indecent haste seem to want to deprive future generations the chance of enjoying the delights of playing golf at Cambuslang GC?

“Late members, who made it possible for us to play here, did not purchase this course for the current membership to consider selling our club for a few paltry pounds.”

And as recently as Friday, the Save Cambuslang Golf Club page posted: “It’s now time we all stand firm against the sale of our club, lets not be persuaded by the pot of ever diminishing gold. We need to protect and preserve our club.

“Lets make sure all who can attend and who are in the same frame of mind as the Save Cambuslang Page, go to the SGM and vote no. It’s time to challenge these faceless people who do not ever seem to play at the club nor have the club’s interests at heart.

“Many of us will gladly put an extra £100+ on our fees to see the back of these people who do not care about the club. Lets make sure we protect and preserve the club’s standing in the community.”

Two thirds of the club’s members must vote for the proposal in order for it to be passed.

If the sale of Cambuslang Golf Club does go ahead, it will be the second Glasgow club in seven months to shut its doors, following the closure of Blairbeth Golf Club in October.

bunkered.co.uk attempted to contact Cambuslang Golf Club for a comment on tomorrow night’s vote but, at the time of writing, could not be reached.
