Kaymer crumbles but Karlberg celebrates

Back nine errors proved costly for Martin Kaymer as he let a three-shot lead slip at the Open d’Italia before being beaten in a play-off by Rikard Karlberg, who clinched his maiden European Tour win.

Kaymer was 21-under-par at the turn but three bogeys in five holes dropped him back, before a birdie at the 16th forced a play-off with the Swede, who went on to win with a birdie at the second hole.

“It was a disappointing finish to be honest,” said Kaymer, who was looking for his first win since the 2014 US PGA Championship. “We made too many mistakes on the back nine. We should have been more focused. I played well all week but not on the back nine today and that has cost me the tournament today.”

A delighted Karlberg said: “To get my first win on Tour and to give myself such a huge boost in my career is pretty special.”

BMW Championship - Round One

Knox misses out on Tour Champ

Sitting 29th before the BMW Championship, Russell Knox was on the cusp of qualification for this week’s season-ending Tour Championship.

But a disappointing four days dropped the Scot down to 34th place with Daniel Berger, Scott Piercy, Harris English and Kevin Na all sneaking in at the final opportunity.

Other notable East Lake absentees include last year’s winner Billy Horschel, Phil Mickelson, Sergio Garcia, Ian Poulter, Keegan Bradley and Hunter Mahan.

GB&I win PGA Cup

Jon Bevan and his Great Britain & Ireland PGA Cup team etched their names into the history books after a titanic singles display at CordeValle, California.

They defeated the United States 5.5-4.5 to take the match 13.5-12.5 and win the Llandudno Trophy on American soil for the first time.

An enthralling Sunday singles went right down to the final hole of the five sessions before Niall Kearney coolly drained an eight-foot putt to win 1UP over Alan Morin and spark jubilant scenes.

“I have the utmost respect for the power and talent of the opposition,” said Bevan. “Our PGA pros are a class above as are the US guys. We probably watched the highest standard of golf outside of the two tours this week.

“To win the PGA Cup is the culmination of 12 months of planning. I’m proud of all of them. I know there is nothing left out there, they’ve left everything in California.”

2015 Walker Cup - Day Two

Scots qualify at Roxburghe

A trio of Scots have made it through to the second stage of qualification for a European Tour card after solid performances at The Roxburghe Hotel & Golf Course.

Mark Hillson, amateur Daniel Young and Neil Henderson were the three who made the cut, while Walker Cup star Gary Hurley (pic) also progressed in his first event as a professional. Jonathan Caldwell, who partnered Rory McIlroy in the 2007 Walker Cup, won the event by five strokes on 16-under-par.

No fewer than nine Scots are in the field for the first qualifying stage at Collingtree Park this week, including Hurley’s Walker Cup team-mate Grant Forrest.

Joining Forrest are 2014 Amateur champion Bradley Neil, Scottish PGA winner Chris Kelly, Jordan Findlay, Gavin Hay, Joel Hendry, Kris Nicol, Michael Stewart and Jay Taylor.
