• Davis Love III says chemistry key in final wildcard pick
• The US captain will complete his team next Sunday night
• Pick will be ‘what fits best for our team’, said Love

DAVIS LOVE III | RYDER CUP

Davis Love III says team chemistry will be key in picking his final Ryder Cup wildcard – not performance in next week’s Tour Championship.

The US captain unveiled Rickie Fowler, J.B. Holmes and Matt Kuchar as the first three of his picks at Hazeltine yesterday, with the final piece of the jigsaw to be completed straight after the Tour Championship at half-time of the Minnesota Vikings NFL game.

“It’s not a scoring contest at the Tour Championship” – Davis Love III

The final wildcard spot was introduced for the 2016 Ryder Cup following the late season form of Billy Horschel two years ago – who won the BMW Championship, Tour Championship and subsequently the FedEx Cup.

However, Love says that the final spot won’t automatically be filled by the American who performs best at East Lake.

“We’ve looked at a lot of guys that are in the Tour Championship and some guys that aren’t in the Tour Championship, and we’ve got a long two weeks ahead of us,” said Davis Love III.

“I’d say the players that are playing the Tour Championship need to try to and win it and not think about Ryder Cup points. The biggest thing I’ve told several players is that it’s not a scoring contest at the Tour Championship for who gets the Ryder Cup pick.

“I’m going to talk to these 11 guys now that we have 11; we’ve got a game plan, a strategy. We’re going to work on that the next two weeks and announce our pick next Sunday night based on what fits best for our team, not really who shoots the lowest scores in the last tournament.”

World No.7 Bubba Watson is one of those players playing at East Lake who will be sweating on a call from Love. At the BMW Championship on Sunday, he told Golfweek’s Adam Schupak: “I am No.7 in the world. If they don’t pick me they must not think I’m good.”

As well as Watson, Justin Thomas, Ryan Moore, Kevin Chappell, Kevin Kisner, Gary Woodland, Roberto Castro, William McGirt, Sean O’Hair, Daniel Berger, Kevin Na and Jason Dufner are the other Americans not yet picked in action at the Tour Championship.
