There has been no shortage of discussion online about the European Team and their US counterparts at this week’s Ryder Cup. As a result, Mindshare Worldwide, a global media agency network, has calculated the breakdown of mentions those battling at Gleneagles received on social media.

In a straight head-to-head, Paul McGinley’s European Team came out on top in the run up to today’s big tee off, sneaking ahead of the US Team with 267672 (51%) of the mentions. Tom Watson’s men were just behind with 255144 mentions, resulting in a 49% share.

As far as individuals are concerned, America’s Phil Mickelson topped the table with 19% of the attention. His captain, Tom Watson, came in second with 17% of the mentions, with Rickie Fowler finishing third on 12%.

“Adaptive marketing is now a vital part of business decision making.”

Surprisingly, world No.1 Rory McIlroy had fewer than 1% of mentions in comments referencing the Ryder Cup. This perhaps points to him being a brand in his own right, where people don’t feel the need to talk about the Ryder Cup when referencing him.

Norm Johnston, chief digital officer for Mindshare Worldwide, explains the system used to calculate the profile of different Ryder Cup figures is one which is a crucial part of business decision making.

“Whilst the league tables we’ve compiled might not relate directly to ability on the golf course, we do find social media can provide great insights that can be used to help our clients be better prepared and adapt to changing conditions,” said Johnston.
