Fabrizio Zanotti was injured at the KLM Open earlier today and had to be taken to hospital for treatment after being struck on the head by a stray golf ball.

The Paraguyan was playing the 16th hole, his seventh of the opening round at the Kennemer club, when he was hit by Frenchman Alexandre Kaleka, playing the 14th.

Blood was said to be flowing from the wound and Zanotti’s playing partner, Hennie Otto, immediately offered assistance. Medical staff rushed to the scene followed by Felipe Aguilar and tournament director Daan Slooter.

Play was then suspended for half an hour by the European Tour as the reigning BMW International Open champion couldn’t be moved for medical reasons. The tournament will now restart at 1:00pm local time.

It is believed Zanotti will be okay, however, his condition isn’t fully known.
