• Henrik Stenson: Olympics would be ‘amazing to be part of’
• Swede looks like a shoe-in for selection in Rio de Janeiro
• Says that Olympic gold would be up alongside majors

HENRIK STENSON

Henrik Stenson has added his thoughts on whether golf should have its place in the Olympics by saying that representing Sweden in Rio de Janeiro would be ‘amazing to be part of’.

Golf is making its return to the Olympic arena in Brazil after a 112-year absence and its inclusion has been a major talking point among leading professionals, with Tiger Woods and Lee Westwood keen to qualify for the tournament, while 2013 Masters winner Adam Scott said that winning an Olympic medal is ‘nothing I’ve ever aspired to do and I don’t think I ever will’.

But with the tournament just over a year away – it’s scheduled to be held from August 11-14 – Henrik Stenson looks like a shoe-in for a place at the Games and has sided with Woods and Westwood in the fact that he’s really looking forward to the prospect.

“It will be an amazing thing to be a part of an Olympic Games” – Henrik Stenson

“I’m excited to go to the Olympics if I get one of the spots,” said the world No.7. “Of course I’m in a good position but a lot of things can happen in a year’s time.

“If I secure my spot though, I’ll be very happy to go. As a sports fan in general, it will be an amazing thing to be a part of an Olympic Games and to go there.”

Speaking to bunkered last month, Westwood said it was seeing the likes of Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and LeBron James in action in London which swayed him to embrace golf’s return to the Olympics, but conceded that ‘majors are always going to be the highest achievement in golf’.

But ahead of the BMW International Open, Henrik Stenson was of a slightly different view, saying that in some years down the line, an Olympic gold medal could very much be on a par.

He said: “If you’re going to put it in there, the majors are still the biggest prizes in our game, and winning an Olympic medal, gold, would be right up there.

“If you managed to get a medal at the Olympic Games, I think looking back it would be something that would grow on you as time goes on. It would mean a lot back in Sweden as well so it will be a lot of motivation to do well there.”
