ROYAL AND ANCIENT GOLF CLUB OF ST ANDREWS

Last Tuesday, the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews named its first female members, almost five months after it reversed its male-only membership policy.

The seven names that have joined the institution as honorary members are Her Royal Highness the Princess Royal, Dame Laura Davies, Annika Sorenstam, Renee Powell, Belle Robertson, Louise Suggs and Lally Segard, and they now get to enjoy the luxuries of the R&A clubhouse.

Built in 1854, the Royal and Ancient clubhouse is recognisable to golfers across the globe and has undergone many different renovations in its 161 years of existence.

The women will now be the first to take advantage of what the Royal and Ancient Golf Club has to offer, with Davies’ sponsor Lynx Golf in particular welcoming her admittance, while also criticising the R&A at the same time for being “appallingly slow” in making their decision.
