• John Daly puts his name down for the Paul Lawrie Match Play
• Big-hitting American is in St Andrews this week for the Open
• The inaugural European Tour event will take place later this month
Two-time major champion John Daly has confirmed that he will be teeing it up at the Saltire Energy Paul Lawrie Match Play at the end of this month.
Taking place at Murcar Links Golf Club in Aberdeen from July 30-August 2, the event is making its debut on the European Tour and Daly will be hanging around in Scotland after the Open at St Andrews this week.
The big-hitting American, who earned the nickname ‘Long John’ as a result, famously lifted the PGA Championship in 1991 after getting in the event as ninth reserve before adding to his major tally at the Home of Golf in 1995.
“I love matchplay” – John Daly
“I am really excited to be playing Paul’s inaugural European Tour event,” said Daly. “I love matchplay and it’s a format of the game that we do not get to play enough of on tour.
“I really appreciate Paul for having me in his tournament. I am looking forward to a week in Aberdeen and hopefully playing really well in front of all the fans.”

Speaking about capturing Daly for the event, tournament host Paul Lawrie said: “I am delighted that John will be playing and look forward to welcoming him at Murcar Links Golf Club. His grip-it-and-rip approach to golf and life has enthralled fans from around the globe for many years.
“I don’t think many of the players will fancy going up against him. His attacking style will give him plenty of birdie opportunities and he will definitely be one to watch.”
The format will see John Daly and 63 of the leading players on The Race to Dubai going up against each other in a straight knock out matchplay format, as they battle it out for a €1million prize fund.
