• American star shoots course record 63 at Aussie Open
• He says: ‘It’s the best I’ve ever played’
• 21-year-old picks up second tour title
• Defending champ Rory McIlroy finishes 15th
Jordan Spieth fired a course-record 63 to win the second professional title of his career at the Australian Open.
The 21-year-old American, controversially benched by Tom Watson at the Ryder Cup, is being tipped at the next major star of the golfing world and won the event comfortably by six shots.
He finished on 13-under-par, ahead of home players Rod Pampling on seven-under, and Brett Rumford on six-under.
Adam Scott finished fifth while Rory McIlroy, the defending champion, never recovered from a disastrous third round and ended the event in 15th spot. The Northern Irishman was, at one point, one off the lead but dropped by shots in two holes in the third round as he stumbled to a five-over 76. A closing 72 wasn’t enough to catch Spieth. “It just wasn’t meant to be,” said McIlroy.
Spieth said his round, which included eight birdies, was something special. “It was the best I’ve ever played,” said Spieth.
The young Texan picked up his first pro title at last year’s John Deere Classic and finished runner-up to Bubba Watson at this year’s Masters. He also tied for fourth at The Players Championship.
