– The win was Chris Kirk’s fourth on the PGA Tour
– He finished one shot ahead of Spieth, Snedeker and Bohn
– Ian Poulter suffers on final day

Chris Kirk | Colonial

Chris Kirk has admitted he was ‘surprised’ to win the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial as he saw off the challenge of Jordan Spieth and Brandt Snedeker over the closing holes to take the title.

Kirk made a par-saving seven-foot putt to card a four-under-par 66 on the final day to finish on 12-under-par, one ahead of Spieth, Snedeker and Jason Bohn, as he claimed his fourth win on the PGA Tour.

“Just to be a part of the history of this tournament is really just amazing to me,” said Kirk. “I was as nervous as I’ve ever been for sure, those up-and-downs on the last couple of holes and especially making that putt on 18 was pretty sweet.”

“To be able to do win when I didn’t really feel like I quite had it is, I feel, a huge step for me” – Chris Kirk

The lead changed hands numerous times during the day and at one stage, 15 players were within two shots of the top spot, and Kirk was pleased to come out the victor despite not firing on all cylinders.

He added: “Every other time I’ve either won or been in this position, I’ve really felt great about pretty much all aspects of my game. To be able to do it when I didn’t really feel like I quite had it is, I feel, a huge step for me.”

It turned out to be a disappointing day for Ian Poulter, though. The Englishman had started the day one off the lead, but struggled to a round of 70 and a tie for fifth place on a day that promised so much.

“It’s a great tournament. I’m happy to be playing. I’m just disappointed that obviously I didn’t get the job done and I really should have. I didn’t play well enough.”

Kirk makes it four, but will Poulter win in America this season?

It was another week in contention for the 39-year-old and another chance missed. Despite already having two PGA Tour wins to his name, he is yet to win a 72-hole strokeplay event on American soil, can you see that changing this year? Leave your thoughts in the ‘Comments’ section below.
