PHIL MICKELSON | THE MASTERS

Three-time Masters winner Phil Mickelson is bullish about his chances heading into the first major of the year – saying he’d be ‘very surprised’ if he wasn’t contending on Sunday afternoon.

The 45-year-old finished runner-up alongside Justin Rose to Jordan Spieth at Augusta National last year – comfortably his best performance of a disappointing 2015 season – and at a course he knows like the back of his hand, it’s safe to say he has high expectations.

“The fact is I’m playing well and I’m playing a golf course that I play extremely well at,” said Mickelson, who has three top five finishes already on the PGA Tour this season. “I would be very surprised if I didn’t have a good chance on the weekend.”

“Of all the courses that I play, my course management on that golf course is the best of anywhere that I play because not only do I know it well enough, where I can and can’t go, but the recovery shots are manageable if I put it in the right spot. And usually I can salvage less than perfect shots and salvage pars.”

Mickelson’s record at Augusta National has been nothing short of exceptional since making his debut in 1991, where he finished T46 and was low amateur. In 23 starts, the five-time major winner has his three wins in 2004, 2006 and 2010, and 12 other top tens.
