MACMILLAN CANCER SUPPORT

Four keen golfers are set to embark on a 100-hole challenge over six East Lothian courses in a bid to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support.

Having played 72 holes in each of the past three years in Ayrshire, Aberdeenshire and Fife as part of Macmillan’s Longest Day Challenge, the quartet of Ross Maclean, his brother Calum, David Henderson and Andrew Bell have decided to up the ante this year with 100 holes – starting at 3.15am.

And despite beginning four years ago with little knowledge of the charity, Ross got to find out a lot more about the charity after his sister-in-law was diagnosed with breast cancer.

“The first year we did it, I’ll be honest and say it was more to do with the challenge and that we were keen golfers,” said Ross. “But once we started to push our fundraising, we looked into the charity a bit more and found out about all the great work that they do.

“Five months after we did this for the first time, my sister-in-law – who was only 29 at the time – was diagnosed with breast cancer and although she didn’t have much interaction with the Macmillan nurses, she used their forums regularly after her diagnosis and throughout her treatment,” said Ross. “They were brilliant with her dad though, who sadly passed away with the illness several years ago.

“I think Macmillan’s ambition sums up their work very well, which is ‘to reach and improve the lives of everyone living with cancer and to inspire millions of others to do the same’.

“We’re hugely grateful to all of the golf courses who have granted us tee times as without them it wouldn’t have been possible.”

Ross, Calum, David and Andrew’s itinerary is as follows:

3.15am – Dunbar Golf Club
7.30am – North Berwick Golf Club
10.20am – Craigielaw Golf Club
1.45pm – The Glen Golf Club
5pm – The Renaissance Club
8.30am – Gullane (ten holes)
