For most people the Quicken Loans National is all about Tiger Woods. However, for some it’s their ticket to the Open.

Erik Compton, Davis Love III and Geoff Ogilvy are among those gunning for a place at Hoylake. If they can finish can finish inside the top-12 players not already qualified they can pack their bags. If not, they’ll be watching it at home.

Travelers Championship - Round One

Erik Compton’s first Open

The US Open runner up has never played in the Open Championship. This year he has shot up the world rankings by more than 200 places. If he can get their, he might just surprise a few people.

“You want to play in majors when you’re playing well,” he told PGATour.com. “And I’m playing well this year.

“If I was in the British, I wouldn’t have played, but now that I’m not in the British, I’m playing.”

Tiger Woods at Quicken Loans National

Compton was quick to praise Tiger woods, and couldn’t hide his excitement at thought of testing himself against one of the game’s greats at the Quicken Loans National.

“We all love it when he’s playing. He’s the best.”

“Tiger has been very very good to me,” said the American. “I’m excited that he’s playing and I have a chance to play against him in the field. We all love it when he’s playing. He’s the best.”

Others at Quicken Loans National

Australian Geoff Ogilvey has played in nine consecutive Opens. That could all end for the former US Open champ if things don’t go his way at Congressional. This season he’s missed more cuts than he’s made – seven cuts from sixteen events – and he’s also without a win since 2010.

Until last year, Davis Love III had made 26 Open appearances in a row, that’s more than Ernie Els and Colin Montgomerie have managed. This year he looks set to miss out again having never finished inside the top-20 all year.
