• Ramsay: “It’s a good thing to have. It touches off everything nicely”

RICHIE RAMSAY

Richie Ramsay has been named the Hilton European Tour Golfer of the Month for March in recognition of his victory at the Trophee Hassan II in Morocco.

The 31-year-old saw off Romain Wattel for a one-shot victory in Agadir, a win which came totally out of the blue following a withdrawal and four missed cuts in the five European Tour events he had played in 2015 prior to the win.

Speaking to the European Tour after receiving the award, which was decided by a panel at Hilton’s Waldorf Astoria Hotel in Edinburgh, Richie Ramsay said: “I was thrilled to win in Morocco after a difficult run of form so far this season, so to hold off the challenge of a top quality field on a difficult final day, and to play like I did to take the title, was fantastic.

“It’s a good thing to have. It touches off everything nicely” – Richie Ramsay

“It’s a good thing to have. It touches off everything nicely and like I say, it was a bit of a slow start to the year but I think a lot of people who I’ve spoken to said the way I handled myself in Morocco, especially with the blip on eight, was really good and I’m very grateful that they voted.”

Ramsay saw off competition from George Coetzee, Trevor Fisher Jnr and Andy Sullivan for the award, all of whom were winners on the European Tour in March at the Tshwane Open, Africa Open and Joburg Open respectively.

Shenzhen International - Day Three

The Scot has since followed up his success at the Trophee Hassan II with a T11 finish at the Shenzhen International last week. He is well placed heading into the weekend of the Volvo China Open, four shots behind leader Julien Quesne, and also reflected on the mental strength required while on tour.

“Golf’s a really tough game and the mental side is far and away the hardest thing to deal with,” Richie Ramsay said. “You try and put that confidence in the bank when you’re out in places like this when things are tougher and you just have to remember that you played really well a few weeks ago.

“So you just have to hang in there. That’s what I did last week and I had a great weekend, so you’ve got to feed off things like this.”
