Rory McIlroy has broken up with tennis player Caroline Wozniacki according to a report in the Irish Independent.

The two-time major winner reportedly called time on his two-year romance with the former world No.1 tennis ace after months of speculation about their relationship. It is alleged that the final straw for the Northern Irishman was when his Danish partner posted a picture of him sleeping to her Twitter followers.

A ‘source’ told the Irish Independent: “Yes they are over. It’s a difficult time for them both but it is for the best in the long run. There were a lot of tears … but I can tell you the pair are no longer an item.”

The claims made by this ‘source’ remain uncorroborated by representatives of Rory McIlroy.

“Rory McIlroy has a lot of respect for Caroline and their time together was good, but he feels it’s time to move on now.”

“The Communications Clinic does not comment on Rory’s private life,” said the PR firm hired by Rory McIlroy Inc, the golfer’s new management company.

Wozniacki, meanwhile, still has a picture of the couple as her Twitter avatar.

The source apparently added: “Rory has a lot of respect for Caroline and their time together was good, but he feels it’s time to move on now. And he wishes her nothing but the best.”

Rumours about McIlroy and Wozniacki’s relationship being on the rocks have been ongoing most of the year and only this weekend nine-time major winner Gary Player told ESPN that he believed Rory and Caroline might not be all that compatible.

“He’s got to find himself a wife that’ll help him, actually almost dedicate her life to him being a success,” said Player. “And that’s hard to find today, because women are extremely independent today.”

– Rory McIlroy & Caroline Wozniacki

Rory McIlroy and Caroline Wozniacki met in Germany in 2011 when they were seated just rows apart at a David Haye boxing match. They got together shortly after Rory split from his childhood sweetheart Holly Sweeney. Despite often conflicting schedules, they have been together for just over two years and have been spotted regularly cheering one another on from the sidelines in their respective sports. However, there have been rumours for most of this year that their relationship has been on the rocks. Yesterday’s report in the Irish Independent is the latest article to fuel that speculation.
