Rory McIlroy isn’t 100% confident in his game heading into the Players Championship – but feels a couple of slight tweaks can put him in great form heading into a busy golfing summer.

The four-time major winner, who entered last week’s Wells Fargo Championship as the defending champion, rocketed up the leaderboard on Sunday with a six-under-par 66, but it wasn’t enough to retain his title, finishing two shots behind James Hahn and Roberto Castro in a tie for fourth place.

But ahead of his seventh visit to TPC Sawgrass this week, the 27-year-old knows he’s on the right track.

“There’s things that aren’t quite where I want them to be and I feel like just a slight tweak here and there, we’ll be able to go into this stretch of golf and ultimately into the US Open in really good form,” he said.

“But I’ve seen enough positive signs this week to know like I’m on the right track, and obviously ending the week playing the way I did today gives me a lot of confidence going into these next few weeks.”

After struggling in his first three starts at TPC Sawgrass, McIlroy has finished T8, T6 and T8 in the past three years – and is hopeful of improving on that again this time around.

“I’ve got a lot more comfortable with Sawgrass,” he said. “I finally accepted that I can’t hit driver as much as I would like there. I’ve always felt that it was a golf course that handcuffed me a little bit.

“The first few years I was quite stubborn and still trying to take on a lot of things instead of accepting the fact that I’m going to have to play the course the way everyone else plays it.

“I’ve learned to at least like the place for that week and accept this is the way I have to play, and the last couple years it’s paid off somewhat for me, at least I’ve improved, and hopefully this year I can go there and improve a little bit again.”
