Rory McIlroy single, bookies have their fun

Rory McIlroy has called off his engagement to fiancé Caroline Wozniacki, ending their relationship only days after issuing wedding invitations.

The Irishman released a brief statement earlier today, explaining why he felt he wasn’t ready for marriage.

“The problem is mine, the wedding invitations issued at the weekend made me realise that I wasn’t ready for all that marriage entails.

“I wish Caroline all the happiness she deserves and thank her for the great times we’ve had. I will not be saying anything more about our relationship in any setting.”

Days earlier Rory McIlroy seemed in good spirits, as he posted on Twitter this picture of himself and Caroline, dinning out in Monte Carlo.

However, some within golf had their doubts over the couples relationship, one of whom being bunkered’s own Michael McEwan. Writing in the latest issue he suggested Caroline was getting in the way of Rory McIlroy’s golf game and becoming a distraction.

“I worry she enjoys the attention a little too much and that her constant presence is going to start getting in Rory’s way – if it hasn’t already,” said Michael.

Shortly after the release of his statement it was time for McIlroy to face the media at the BMW Championship. Rory was visibly upset, and understandably looked disheartened, however he spoke honestly to the media, explaining that it was a difficult time but reaffirmed his commitment to golf.

“I’m not going to lie,” said Rory

“It’s going to be very difficult, at least when I get inside the ropes I can just try and concentrate on the shot at hand.”

“There’s no good time to end a relationship, I made a commitment to be here, it’s the European Tour’s flagship event.

“I thought it was my duty to come back and play in this event.”
