Ryder Cup captain Colin Montgomerie recorded his first top ten of the season at the Egyptian Open, finishing fifth.

The Scot produced rounds of 69, 72, 69 and 72 to end up seven shots adrift of winner Steven Tiley of England.

Montgomerie, by far the biggest name in the field assembled at the Mirage City Club in Cairo, was joined in the upper regions of the leaderboard by fellow Scots George Murray and Ross Bain, who finished sixth and seventh respectively.

Simon Dunn (292) and Glasgow’s Scott Jamieson (293) were also in action but ended up well off the pace.

As of next year the Egyptian Open, which boasts a prize fund of $200,000, will begin a two-year stint as an event on the Challenge Tour, which provides a valuable stepping stone to the top tier of the professional game for some of Europe’s most promising golfers
