SCOTLAND | SNOW

The freak Scottish weather of late continued with a number of courses in the home of golf closed on Friday due to… snow!

Just days from May, widespread flurries wreaked havoc on Thursday and into the night as, in the space of a week, the temperature dropped from 19 degrees to five.

Lanark Golf Club (above) was one of the clubs closed and, despite being situated 650m above sea level, club manager George Cuthill said he hadn’t seen anything like this in his time in the position.

“We’ve got four inches of snow on the course and my greenkeeper said this morning it was 1981 the last time we had snow at this time of year,” he said. “I’ve been here for 26 years and I can’t recollect just before a holiday weekend in May being closed for snow.”

Elmwood Golf Club in Cupar, Fife, was also affected and, although the snow there has melted, the course was closed due to flooding.

“It’s a big inconvenience,” said head greenkeeper Greg Kilgour. “There was a lot of snow last night and although it’s melted, the rain gauge has said we’ve had 19mm – but it’s probably more than that with it falling as snow.

“The greens and fairways are flooded, so we made the decision to close it. We’ll keep an eye on things throughout the day, but I’m not too optimistic.”

Elsewhere, Airdrie Golf Club in Lanarkshire is closed and posted this picture on Twitter.

And West Linton Golf Club, a 20-minute drive south of Edinburgh, posted this.

While Alyth Golf Club posted this on Facebook.
