• Sergio Garcia disagrees with Rory over Ryder Cup changes
• He doesn’t want to see major changes to qualifying process
• “The important thing is we don’t panic now,” he said

SERGIO GARCIA | RYDER CUP

Sergio Garcia has gone against the views of Rory McIlroy and Lee Westwood by saying major changes aren’t needed to the Ryder Cup qualifying process.

Over the past couple of months, world No.2 McIlroy has spoken out on more than one occasion about how he would like to see the top 12 European players in the world rankings chosen for the biennial tournament.

Lee Westwood agreed, saying what tour a player is on shouldn’t matter, but Garcia believes there shouldn’t be a kneejerk reaction to what was only Europe’s second Ryder Cup defeat this millennium.

“The important thing is we don’t panic now,” Sergio Garcia told Sky Sports News HQ. “We’ve won eight of the last 11 so we’re doing some thing right.

“Maybe a little change here or there, but there shouldn’t be major changes because we’ve been very successful.”

Garcia also insisted that it was the players who were to blame for Team Europe’s Ryder Cup defeat and not captain Darren Clarke.

The Spaniard, who scored two points from his five matches including a half in a thrilling duel with Phil Mickelson in the Sunday singles, said the European team just didn’t putt well enough to take home the trophy for the fourth time in a row.

“In the European team, we never criticise our captains,” he added. “It doesn’t matter if they are good or bad – the captain can do everything right – if the players don’t play well enough.

“We never criticise our captains” – Sergio Garcia

“The Ryder Cup just comes down to playing well that week and making more putts than your opponent. We’ve been fortunate to do that for a while now and this year, they were a little bit better than us.”

Do you agree with Sergio Garcia?

Who are you siding more with on this issue? Should there be substantial changes like Rory McIlroy is suggesting? Or do you agree with Sergio Garcia that there is no need for a kneejerk reaction and only minor changes are needed? Leave your thoughts in the ‘Comments’ section below.
