• Sergio Garcia unfazed at not having a major under his belt at 35
• Thinks he’s more likely to win one than Tiger making it 15 though
• Leads the BMW Masters after an exceptional eight-under-par 64

SERGIO GARCIA

Sergio Garcia isn’t concerned about being majorless at 35 and believes it’s more likely he’ll break his duck before Tiger Woods reaches 15 at this present time.

The Spaniard has four runner-up finishes in majors, coming the closest at the 2007 Open Championship at Carnoustie, and says it’ll be if he’s still majorless in ten years’ time that he’ll start to feel pressure.

“More European players are winning majors here and there, so do I feel more pressure? I guess every year that goes by, it feels another chance that has kind of gone by,” said Sergio Garcia.

“If I get to 45 and haven’t won any, then I will probably feel a lot of pressure” – Sergio Garcia

“If I get to 45 and haven’t won any, then I will probably feel a lot of pressure. But I’m still young enough to be able to do it – hopefully several times. If I keep playing well, there are still a lot of majors to come so there’ll be a lot of opportunities there for me.”

And asked about whether he’d win a major before Tiger Woods, who is currently recovering after back surgery, the 35-year-old added: “At the moment, it looks like I have a better chance, but we’ll see.”

BMW Masters - Day One

One thing’s for sure is that Garcia has started the BMW Masters incredibly well, posting an eight-under-par 64 to lead by one from Byeong-Hun An and Victor Dubuisson after the first round.

The Ryder Cup star, in his first competitive round at Lake Malaren GC, hit 14 of 14 fairways and 17 of 18 greens, with only 27 putts, leaving him unsurprisingly delighted with his start.

“It was a nice round,” he said. “I had a couple of nice birdies – three birdies in the first four on my front nine and then another three or four birdies on the first four or five on the back nine.

“I’m feeling a bit more comfortable, a bit better. Hopefully I keep improving as the week goes on, and we’ll be out there on Sunday having a chance.”
