80 – the new 59

When is shooting 80 good news? When you shot 90 the day before. That was the case for Bryden Macpherson on day two at Hoylake. The young Aussie went round in eight-over to finish on 26-over-par for the tournament. In 36 holes, he had 12 bogeys, four doubles, one triple and one quad. His sole birdie came at the tenth in round two.

The Open :: Quote of the Day

“I don’t know what he shot. Probably terrible.”

Bubba Watson isn’t expecting anything special from his housemate for the week, Webb Simpson.

Bad Day

Guessing that the ‘^’ on Jason Day’s presser transcript isn’t there in place of ‘Horlicks’…

Slim pickings

Darren Clarke is in the shape of his life after losing four stone in the gym since last year’s Open. Not everyone’s impressed, though. Catching sight of him on the big screen TV in the tented village, one woman was heard to remark: “I preferred him when he was fat.” Hey, the heart desires what the heart desires!

Birdie men

Most birdies in the championship so far? That’s a record Rory McIlroy is sharing with former Masters champ Charl Schwartzel. Both have had 13. Unlucky for some.* (*not Rory)

Sand and deliver

How bad are they expecting conditions to get at Hoylake in round three? These sand bags at the spectator entrance tell their own story…

It ain’t over ’til it’s over

Rory McIlroy might have a commanding lead just now but don’t go writing off the rest of the field yet. Only 17 times in the last 43 years has the 36-hole leader gone on to win the Open.
