Royal Liverpool’s answer to TrackMan was on the range today… or so he thought. Each time Thongchai Jaidee hit one down the middle, the man announced exactly how far the Thai had hit it. For example: “Straight as a dye, 332-yards that one.” Impressive distance judging, mate!

Lost in translation

As an elderly man looked up at the 18th grandstand, turned to the woman next to him and joked: “I’ll need a zimmer to get up there.” The woman turned round, and in an American accent said: “A zimmer? Is that the same thing as a stretcher?” The old man, ever the gentleman, calmly corrected her and gazed back up.

Everyone knows how important gym work is in the careers of the top players. However, to this young fan, they’re super human. “Are golfers as strong as Iron Man?” the young boy asked his Dad. “I don’t know,” replied his father. “What about a dinosaur?” the youngster then asked. “I don’t know, son” his Dad repeated. It must have been a long day for the pair.

A full gallery watched the players warm up on the range today – that is, until a few drops of rain fell. The English crowds were having none of it and the stand emptied within minutes. Presumably, those left were Scots, wondering what all the fuss was about…
