• Tiger Woods set for another lengthy spell on the sidelines
• Hasn’t started rehab after second back surgery last month
• But he still has his sights set on Jack Nicklaus’ major record

TIGER WOODS

Tiger Woods has played down hopes of a swift return to the PGA Tour after admitting that he’s yet to start rehabilitation for the back surgery he had a month ago.

On September 16, Woods underwent his second microdiscectomy in the space of six months after a small disc fragment was found pinching the nerve, causing him some significant discomfort in his last start at the Wyndham Championship in August, where he came T10 for his best finish on the PGA Tour in 2015.

The surgery was called a ‘complete success’ but Woods had ruled himself out until at least the Hero World Challenge in early December. Now, though, it looks as though the 14-time major winner is set to be on the sidelines for a lot longer.

“Rehab will be tedious and long” – Tiger Woods

Speaking at an exhibition in Mexico City, where he was set to play alongside Matt Kuchar in the Bridgestone Americas Golf Cup, Tiger Woods said: “Rehab will be soon, and it will be tedious and long. The last one, it took me a while to get back. Some players on tour have done the same procedure and to be back pain-free it took them over a year.”

But despite his ongoing injury troubles and lack of form – he wasn’t won since the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational in August 2013 – Woods, who turns 40 in December, still has his sights set on eclipsing Jack Nicklaus’ tally of 18 major titles.

Wyndham Championship - Final Round

“It’s important for me to have more than 18 majors when all is said and done,” said the now world No.334. “It took Jack his whole career to achieve it and mine is not done yet. I believe that I have a very good record for 20 years on the tour.

“The main thing is to get fit and to reach my 40s with good health to be as successful as Vijay , who won most of his tournaments at that age. It’s something that I hope I will be able to do. I want to play at an elite level with the new kids for a long, long time.”
