BRYCE RITCHIE • EDITOR
WINNER – Jason Day
Rory hasn’t won Stateside (yet) this year and Spieth might just have to rely too much on his putting. Jason Day, though, is in the form of his life and, fittingly, is the only one in the top three of the rankings without a US Open win. Not for long, though.
OUTSIDER – Brooks Koepka
The guy hits it miles and has a great short game. That’s a requirement for a US Open. He’s finished runner-up in his last two events, even though he said “hasn’t played that well”. Tying for fourth back in 2014 will also serve him well. And whisper it…. he’s world No.16.
MICHAEL MCEWAN • ASSISTANT EDITOR
WINNER – Phil Mickelson
This is the week. ‘Leftie’ has been playing sneaky good golf most of this season: second at Pebble Beach, fifth at the WGC-Cadillac Championship, fourth in the Wells Fargo and, most recently, second again in the FedEx St Jude Classic. Mark my words, this time next week, we’ll all be writing about the latest career Grand Slam winner.
OUTSIDER – Russell Knox
The Invernesian is in the top ten on the PGA Tour this season for both Driving Accuracy (10th) and Greens In Regulation (4th), both of which are important for a US Open. All he needs is a hot week with his wand and he’ll be bang in contention.

WINNER – Jason Day
You can’t get past the fact he’s THE man to beat at the moment. While Jordan Spieth and Rory McIlroy are always a danger, Day’s record of eight wins in his last 18 events is out of this world. He’s long off the tee and ranked No.1 in the PGA Tour’s Strokes Gained Putting for the 2016 season so far. He’ll definitely be there or thereabouts.
OUTSIDER – Brooks Koepka
With solo second and tied-second place finishes in each of his last two starts, Koepka is a man in form. When you throw in the fact you need to be long and straight off the tee as well as a good putter, Koepka is an ideal candidate. Many say you have to play ‘boring golf’ for four days to win the US Open. If Koepka can deal with the mental side of that challenge, his price of 40/1 to win is way beyond where it should be.
MARTIN INGLIS • ONLINE WRITER
WINNER – Jordan Spieth
In the company of Gary Player at Royal Troon last week, the Black Knight said he’d rather be Jordan Spieth than Rory or Jason heading into Oakmont. So how can you argue with him? The 22-year-old showed he was well and truly over his Masters meltdown with his win at the Dean & Deluca Invitational and looks primed for the defence of his US Open title.
OUTSIDER – Matt Kuchar
Very much in form, Kuch’s last four results on the PGA Tour read: T4, T6, 3, T3. And his recent US Open record isn’t bad, either. The American hasn’t finished outside the top 30 in his last six US Opens, with a best of T6 at Pebble Beach in 2010. If Kuch is going to break his major duck, this is the perfect opportunity.
