Sorenstam announces retirementLPGA Tour star Annika Sorenstam has announced that she will retire at the end of the season. The 37-year-old is one of the greatest-ever lady golfers and won 72 LPGA tournaments and ten 'Majors' in a glittering career. "Because I love the game so much, this is obviously a hard decision, but it feels like the right one," said Sorenstam. "I wanted to leave on my terms when it felt right. I didn't want an injury to take me away from this game. Now I feel at peace." Garcia ends winless droughtSergio Garcia put an end to three winless years on the PGA Tour with a superb play-off triumph over American Paul Goydos in the Players Championship, the so-called fifth 'Major'. Garcia sealed the win with a par the the notorious 17th at TPC Sawgrass after Goydos took double after finding the water. "It's just a lot of hard work that is starting to pay off," said Garcia, who also thanked Tiger Woods for not playing. "This is huge for me and I'm sure it will be huge for everybody back at home." Americans thinking of EuropeTwo of American golf's biggest draws, John Daly and Phil Mickelson, have indicated that they may take up membership to the European Tour in the near future. Daly, who has been playing in Europe on sponsor's exemptions this year, said he would "not rule out playing a full season in Europe" because he could hit driver more often in Europe than in the States. Mickelson's manager, meanwhile, said the prospect of his client joining the tour in the future was "an option in the future". Nicklaus honoured by PGA TourJack Nicklaus has received the PGA Tour's lifetime achievement award for his contributions to the game, both on and off the course, and for serving as an 'ambassador' to golf. "Clearly, in this sport, Jack Nicklaus is the ultimate lifetime achiever," said Tim Fincham, the PGA Tour commissioner. Nicklaus said: "It means I'm getting old. They don't give you a lifetime achievement award unless it's near the last thing. It was a very nice thing. |
