Dear Bunkered...

If Gregory Havret had found the terrible lie Phil Mickelson ended in at the ninth hole at Loch Lomond in the final round of the Barclays Scottish Open, would he have been given the privilege of a free drop? I doubt it. In past events, we have seen Tiger and Ernie Els escape virtually unpunished after wild shots with generous rulings that, while within the Rules of Golf, are not in the spirit of it. Justice was done when Havret won the play-off.

A lesser player could have had his confidence shaken by the incident. I was surprised that Mickelson played the ruling card as he is normally such a gentleman.

John Milliken, Oban

Editor’s Reply: : I have to agree and, of course, Tiger got a dodgy ruling in The Open.
