Dear Bunkered...
The televising of The Open Championship at Carnoustie showed the great army of officials and hangers-on who were present inside the ropes behind the players.
The commentators mentioned this on several occasions and I think the maximum number they counted was 37. No matter how unobtrusive they may try to be, they inevitably obscure the view of some of the paying spectators. What a contrast from The Masters. When at Augusta this year, I noticed a distinct difference. Only the players, their caddies and the referee were regularly visible. The sound and television recordists kept close to the ropes and only appeared at the last moment as required and, likewise, the score-carrier was as unobtrusive as possible. What function is performed by the vast array seen at The Open? They obviously are not required to do anything other than ensure that they obtain a better view (without paying) than the many thousands outside the ropes.
Bob McKenna, Selkirk
EDITOR’S REPLY: The majority of these people are photographers and reporters and there’s no doubt that they do get in the way of the paying public at times.
