Golf now is not the domain of the wealthy hierarchy of our country, thanks to changes in our society. Due to being working-class citizens, it is only after retirement that we (the peasants) are able to tread the hallowed fairways. It is wrong for Golf Clubs to make concessions to the older members who have been members for many years. Many members are not the lucky ex-students, but most of us ‘leeches’ referred to are probably like myself (76) or older. We were encouraged to learn a trade, which for some of us did not receive a golden handshake or big pensions when we retired. There are many clubs that do not charge £1,600 entry fees, and welcome ex-working class players. The seniors referred to have contributed to this country and community by paying various taxes imposed by the Government; some served the country in the armed forces by doing National Service plus playing their golf fees. Concessions in the real world start at 60/65 years of age, not 50 like your elite club members. I myself play all the Sunday competitions, even though my chances are very limited. EDITOR’S REPLY: I am firmly of the opinion that senior golfers get concessions, particularly if they have been long-serving members.
