This week’s Turkish Airlines Open is no ordinary European Tour event – as these pictures show.
Former world No.1 Martin Kaymer joined high-flying Italian star Matteo Manassero at the Maxx Royal Belek Golf & Spa, host venue for this week’s heavily promoted Turkish Airlines Open, for a PR workout of epic proportions.
Targets were placed in an expansive lagoon overlooking the breathtaking white sands of the Belek coastline with both Kaymer and Manassero taking alternate shots to hit specific floating targets.
Kaymer won the stunt, setting off a fireworks display and getting the week off to a great start, helped, in part, by the relentless PR work of Tiger Woods, who hit drives across continents. Sadly, only a few hours later, play would be disrupted by torrential rain.
“I can honestly say I have never hit a shot from a more luxurious setting,” said Manassero. “I have been set some great challenges in the past, but this was one of the most spectacular.”
Kaymer added: “I think everyone has been extremely impressed with the outstanding quality and service this week. The hotel is world class and I can certainly understand the appeal for golfers wanting to visit Turkey to play golf. A great venue for Turkey’s first edition of The Turkish Airlines Open.”
