The final round of the BMW Championship suffered delay after delay yesterday as bad weather in Illinois battered both the players and the course into submission, meaning all but six players have to return on Monday to complete their round.

Torrential rain left standing water affecting fairways and greens on the par-71 Conway Farms course and it was decided very early on that an extra day would be needed to finish the penultimate event of the PGA Tour season.

Overnight leader Jim Furyk was one player who suffered a frustrating day as he didn’t even make it out onto the course to try and close out the tournament following the magnificent 59 he carded in the second round on Friday.

His sub-60 round was only the sixth in PGA Tour history and even included a bogey. Following his round on Friday he said, “It was a little hectic down the stretch.

“I had the three-putt at five and you could see the nerves at the sixth, leaving the putt short. I got myself back on track at seven, then I was between clubs at eight with a pretty good chance to make my birdie.

“I told myself at nine, ‘how many chances are you going to have in your life to do this again?’.

The highlight of the round for the 2003 US Open champion was when holed a 115-yard wedge for eagle on the par-4 15th hole.

Tiger Woods suffered contrasting fortunes to Furyk in his second round when he was handed a two shot penalty after a TV producer spotted Woods’ ball moving when he attempted to remove a twig from behind his ball.

This was the third time this season that the 14-time major champion has been punished by video evidence, after being penalised earlier this year at the Abu Dhabi Championship and the Masters. Nonetheless, after viewing video replays of the incident in the scorer’s hut, Woods remained adamant that his ball had just oscillated and had not moved from the original position.

“I played the shot, played the round, they replayed it and gave me two shots,” said Woods speaking to the media on Saturday. ““It’s one of those things where I thought the ball oscillated, and I thought that was it. I thought that was the end of story. But they saw otherwise.”

“I was pretty hot because I felt like, as I said, nothing happened. I felt like the ball oscillated and that was it. I played the rest of the round grinding my tail off to get myself back in the tournament.”

Woods starts his final round four shots off the lead, but will feel he should only be two back and right in contention to win the tournament. Furyk will be looking to bring an end to three years without a PGA Tour victory as he defends his slender lead against the in-form Steve Stricker, who is contending yet again on the final day of a tournament, lying in second place.

Brandt Snedeker, Zach Johnson and Woods are also amongst the chasing pack in what will be a pulsating final round when it swings into full action.
