This is a question that was banded about the golfing world in the lead up to the tournament, and many were unsure if we would miss Tiger. Now the tournament is over, it’s safe to say, from a spectator’s point of view, we definitely missed him.

As enjoyable as the Masters was, and always will be, there were a lot of guys fighting to win their first major near the end of the tournament, which is great, but there’s nothing like a surge from Tiger over the weekend to ramp up excitement.

Speaking to a colleague about this topic earlier in the week, and he struck the nail on the head. There’s something about Tiger, a very watchable quality, no matter if he is good, bad, or indifferent he is exciting to watch.

Very few players on tour have that these days. You’ve got the marquee names that everyone will watch, sure, but none come close to the attraction Woods offers.

Ask non-golfers about the game, and the first thing that will resonate is Tiger Woods, ask anyone between the age of 10 and 23 who their favourite golfer will most likely be Tiger Woods.

He built a full generation of golfers, he built golf as we know it today, people seem to forget that very quickly. You can’t take him out of one of the biggest tournaments of the year and expect him not to be missed.

I’m not saying the Masters wasn’t interesting, far from it. But it lacked that X-factor, that extra level of excitement that comes with the presence of arguably the best golfer to have ever played the game.

People are all too quick to put him down when things go wrong. No matter what you think of him as a person; when you take him away from the game, away from the major events, the game loses out as a result.

Fingers crossed he’ll back to full fitness in time to play a Pinehurst No.2
