While the driver generally takes the headline in big equipment releases, the new G irons are a real standout in this latest Ping line-up.
According to Marty Jertson, Ping’s senior design engineer, they were looking for technologies that could help them find even more distance, but also give them a higher launch and more stopping power.
Where the Custom Tuning Port has previously been partially visible behind the face, it has now been placed deeper and is fully concealed in the sole for the first time.
The aesthetics have been improved, too. The offset is similar to that found in the G30 irons, but it looks a lot less when you sit the iron at address.
The topline also appears thinner than it did in G30, but this is actually down to a bit of trickery from Ping. While the topline is actually almost exactly the same as it was in G30, Ping’s contoured finishing makes it appear thinner, an attribute the brand believes will see a number of its staffers on tour transfer into the new G iron in the coming weeks.
Feel has also been improved through an interesting piece of innovation. The badge that sits on the back of the iron has had its surface area ‘optimised’, meaning the amount of feel on offer has increased, while the sound on iron shots is also much better than it was in G30.
