Are you wearing the right golf shoes?
Golf shoes aren’t typically the first thing we look to buy when updating our current golf getup. However, this can be one of the most important changes, because having the right shoes will help you hit better shots more often. Trust us.
Now, there are many things to take into consideration when you’re looking to buy a new pair of golf shoes. Do they look good or are they comfortable? How much do they cost or what technology is involved?
There are several factors to take into consideration but, the question is, are you wearing the right golf shoes?
Well, here are a few things you should be looking out for…
Comfort is key
Comfort is always going to be at the forefront of everyone’s mind, but everyone prefers a slightly different feeling. So where do you begin to choose? Well, for example, you have a FootJoy Premiere Series or a FootJoy FlexCarbon.
Both of these shoes are extremely comfortable, but they offer a different feel and that’s hugely important to finding a shoe that’s specific to you. So always make sure that you’re trying enough options, until you find the right one that suits you.
Traction control to major tom
Not having the right traction on your golf shoes is hugely important. It dictates how your foot moves throughout the golf swing when interacting with the ground. For example, the new Under Armour Drive Pro shoes have been designed to move with you and allow you to swing through more easily, purely on the traction design on the sole.
Another tip: understand what it is that you want from your golf shoes? Do you struggle to get through the ball? Do you want a little bit more stability? Well, traction plays a huge part in allowing you to hit better shots, be more stable throughout your golf swing and give you better control.
Stability helps against resistances, so a greater level of stability will keep your feet secure.
Spikes vs Spikless
Spiked golf shoes versus spikeless: the age-old debate. This is always down to personal opinion, however the argument for spikeless shoes is that they’re better for you in drier weather. If you are more powerful and use the ground more effectively, then a spikeless shoe actually may be the better option.
However, a spike design is always going to give you that extra little bit of stability and grip, especially with different lies, grasses and playing conditions. Spiked is always going to be a little bit better in wetter weather but it’s dependent on how you use the ground.
If you want more stability and more traction and help against resistances, then a spike design is going to be a great option. But if you’re wanting something that allows your foot to move a little more freely and still has all the traction and great control, a spikeless model is the one.
Bringing the energy
If you’ve ever felt your feet get tired after a round, then I would suggest you look at the energy return benefits of a golf shoe.
This is essentially the cushioning, foam and insole technology you’ll find in the golf shoe. Now this doesn’t just apply to the walkers of the golf course, this applies to everyone who is swinging the golf club because you want to be able to maximise the amount of energy you put through the ground, so no energy is lost through your swing.
This will result in more power, more club speed, potentially longer distances, but also less fatigue in your feet so you have more energy in your shoes and better grip on the ground as a result of better energy return.
Looking the part
We all want to have the best looking golf shoes that go with our outfit. Now there will be some which maybe aren’t to everyone’s taste. You do have ones which are a little bit loud, bit more colourful, and then you have something which is a little bit more traditional and more classic in style.
However, there are a few which give the best of both worlds, as a modern spin on a classic design. There are so many brands out there to choose from, too, whether you want Echo, FootJoy, Under Armour, Adidas, Nike and more. You’re spoiled for choice.
Laces or BOA?
This is always an interesting talking point: laces versus the BOA system. Personally, I always prefer laces. Some shoes have a specific way to lace up your shoes so you’re more supported and secure through your swing.
However, the BOA systems are also incredibly well engineered to give you less hassle. I’ve had a pair of BOA shoes in the past and I’m a huge fan of them. They are easy just to tighten and reduce any stress or hassle.
But I have to say laces are the way, for me. Everyone’s different, however, and there’s no right or wrong way to tie or tighten your laces with the BOA’s system, so it’s all down to personal preference on what feeling you like and how your foot is secured into your shoe.
If the price is right
Shoes certainly range in price, depending on what you’re after. They start on the higher end, around £250, all the way down to around £100.
Now if you are price sensitive, then you will still be able to get some fantastic golf shoes. Regardless of your budget, you can opt for the lower end of the scale, and will see less tech, but it can still tick all the boxes you’re looking for.
