If you’re tired of seeing the left side of the golf course, then this one change could transform your game. It is certainly working for me.

I’m someone who always likes to change things up so I can get everything out of the golf ball to hit the longest and straightest drives possible.

I’m also someone who hits a lot of shots to the left, which can be my undoing when I have a good score going on the course.

For me, it’s all about face control at impact, which is dictated by club path and face to path, especially with my faster than average swing.

Of course, you can look at getting lessons and working on better positions in the swing to produce better face control, something which I do, but you can also look at your grip. When I say that, I mean the way you put your hands on the grip, but also the type of grip you use.

If you have a strong left hand grip and your right hand wants to roll over the top you’re more than likely going to have a bad shot that goes left, which can get worse under pressure.

So, is there a solution? I had a look at what the fastest and longest hitters are using and one man caught my attention: Bryson DeChambeau. Surprise, surprise Bryson DeChambeau is using a grip that helps him keep the face squarer at impact.

I got my hands on this grip which is a JumboMax Tour XL. Let me tell you, this really took me by surprise for a number of reasons.

Firstly, the size of this grip is massive. It’s like holding a baseball bat but for me, that’s a positive. With the bigger grip, there is less movement and rotation of the clubhead at impact, stopping it from turning over.

Secondly, this grip also weighs 123g which is crazy, as a stand tour velvet is 42g. However, this is a counterbalance grip, which has more weight in the butt end of the grip making the clubhead feel lighter. This adjusts the swing weight but makes you feel like you can move the clubhead faster, even with that weight in the grip

I’ve never felt in so much control of the club. I struggled to hit it left which was great for me. I tried to hit a hook but I just couldn’t, which was brilliant and meant I could trust it more. This helped me to be more confident and aggressive with my turn which translated in to slightly faster club speed and ball speed.

What also stood out was how my mishits performed. Because the face was coming through squarer, the strike location was more central and consistent, if it was slightly high in the face or off-centre, the ball would still travel straight.

If anything, my bad shots are now a fade which I can definitely live with if it takes a hook out of play.

This grip may not be for everyone as it is the biggest JumboMax do, but I’m putting it on my driver which I use for long drive competitions. No more hooks for me and more balls in play can only be a good thing.

JumboMax do have a number of different sizes and weights in their grips, so you’re guaranteed to find something that works for you.
